CURRICULUM

The program of the Renfrew & District Christian School is designed to integrate faith and learning in all subject areas, at all levels. We receive most of our curriculum from the Ontario Alliance of Christian Schools (OACS) and Christian Schools International (CSI). These organizations ensure that we have a quality program that meets or exceeds the Ontario Ministry of Education standards and provides our students with a strong foundation for their lives. The staff and Program Committee regularly review the curriculum to ensure that the content maintains high standards and remains current.

REQUIRED HOURS

Our students are required to be in school for at least 1000 hours per school year. This number is 50 hours greater than other school systems due to the specific Bible instruction necessary for our students. The school day begins at 8:45 a.m. and ends at 3:20 p.m.

We feel confident that our students receive a very good Christian education that will prepare them well for their future!

STANDARDIZED TESTING

Every other year in November, the students in grades 3 – 8 take the Canadian Tests of Basic Skills (CTBS). CTBS is a standardized, national test that compares the performance of our students to that of other students across Canada. On average, our students’ percentile rankings are significantly higher than the national percentile rankings.

TECHNOLOGY

Our school has a computer lab where students are taught a variety of skills. There are also computers in the classrooms which are used by the classroom teachers as curriculum support.

RESOURCE

Students who have needs which cannot be totally met within the classroom are referred to our resource teacher. Placement may be initiated by either the classroom teacher or the parents. Students are assessed upon entering the school as well as during the school year. Our school also offers an enrichment program based on availability of program and funding.

JUNIOR AND SENIOR KINDERGARTEN

Kindergarten is offered on Monday and Wednesday each week. We are thrilled to be able to offer a kindergarten class that is small and personal. The kindergarten program at the Renfrew & District Christian School is a very helpful step in preparing children for the elementary grades. The program includes Bible stories and songs, reading, games, play time, arts and crafts, as well as basic number, phonics, and letter facts. There are a number of activity centers in the classroom as well. The Senior Kindergarten students also spend time focusing on reading and mathematics readiness. We use the Connections reading program to help our Senior Kindergarten students learn words and prepare for grade one. Each month students also explore various themes such as God’s Gift of Food, God’s Plan for the Seasons, Nursery Rhymes, Transportation, etc. and these themes are used across the curriculum.
