Parents As Partners
Parents who felt that it was their responsibility and privilege to provide their children with a Christian education in a day school setting founded the Renfrew & District Christian School. The school employs staff members but remains parent-controlled.Parents volunteer much of their time and talents on behalf of their children. This means making adjustments and sacrifices for most parents, but it also means that parents help direct and determine what is being taught in the classroom. Different people have different talents. Some are gifted with leadership qualities and others prefer to work behind the scenes. At RDCS there are many opportunities for parental involvement including:
- Serving a term on the Board of Directors
- Volunteering on a Committee (e.g. Program, Finance, Public Relations, Building & Grounds, Helping Hands, Admissions, etc.) Fundraising events (like fundraising dinners, Walk-a-thon)
- Summer work projects (like painting, lawn mowing, etc.)
- Providing transportation for and/or chaperoning extra-curricular activities
- Providing extra supervision during skating at Mateway<
- Assisting teachers and students in the classrooms
Parents are also asked to support the students and the teachers by showing a genuine interest in the activities of the class and school. Inquiring into what is being studied, seeing that the students complete their homework assignments, and attending school assemblies are examples of the kind of support that is appreciated by both students and teachers.
TRANSPORTATION
At RDCS there is no bus service available for students and so parents are asked to transport their children to and from school each day. If there are difficulties in this regard, special arrangements (e.g. carpooling) can be made by contacting the principal.
COMMUNICATION WITH PARENTS
The staff at RDCS seeks to communicate regularly with parents and their children and the activities that are taking place at the school. On a bi-weekly basis the School Ties newsletter is published to keep parents informed about upcoming events, homework, and announcements that are important for the daily running of the school. The Public Relations Committee publishes a quarterly newsletter entitled The Messenger for the membership, which contains information from committees and the classrooms. Report Cards are sent home three times a year. We also conduct parent-teacher interviews during the first term. Parents are also asked to call the school or visit with the teachers if they have concerns about their children’s academic progress. The Board hosts two membership meetings a year to keep parents and supporters up to date on issues relating to the management and operation of the school.
